Problem

How many credit hours do I have to take to be considered full-time for financial aid? Part-time?

Solution

Enrollment status for the fall, spring, and summer semesters is determined by registered total semester credit hours:

StatusCredits
Full-Time12 or more
3/4 Time

9 to 11.5

1/2 Time6 to 8.5
Less than 1/2 time1 to 5.5

Students are considered full-time when they are actively enrolled in 12 or more credit hours and half-time when they are actively enrolled in 6 or more credit hours. Generally, students must be enrolled at least half-time in required course work to receive most types of aid, including Federal Direct Stafford Loans. An undergraduate student may receive a Pell Grant for less than half-time enrollment. Summer enrollment requirements can vary (FAFSA for Summer).

Different financial aid types have different enrollment requirements. You should contact the Financial Aid Office to confirm award requirements.
